ATI Technologies Inc., commonly called ATI, was a Canadian semiconductor technology corporation based in Markham, Ontario, that specialized in the development of graphics processing units and chipsets. Founded in 1985, the company listed publicly in 1993 and was acquired by AMD in 2006.

As you already know, AMD started out as a processor company that started competing with Intel soon after it launched. Another massive technology company, Nvidia, makes graphics cards. ATI competed with Nvidia, so AMD bought ATI in order to compete with them as well.

ATI produces metals including titanium and titanium alloys, nickel-based alloys and superalloys, stainless and specialty steels, zirconium, hafnium, and niobium, tungsten materials, forgings and castings. ATI Inc.

Obviously, that never happened, as AMD closed its acquisition of ATI last year and Nvidia continues on as a standalone company.
