Word files are commonly used as the format for sending text documents via e-mail because almost every user with a computer can read a Word document by using the Word application, a Word viewer or a word processor that imports the Word format (see Microsoft Word Viewer).
The older DOC is the default extension of MS Word 2003 while DOCX is the default extension of Microsoft Word 2007 and above.
Open Word. Or, if Word is already open, select File > New. In the Search for online templates box, enter a search word like letter, resume, or invoice. Or, select a category under the search box like Business, Personal, or Education.
DOC file extension refers to a word processing document format. This binary file format is proprietary of Microsoft and is native to Microsoft's most popular word processing application, Microsoft Word. It's a plain text document format which can also contain hyperlinks, images, alignments, etc.
Word documents, on the other hand, can be generated in Microsoft Word and saved as either a DOC/DOCX or PDF file. If you need to make changes to the document, you may do so in Microsoft Word and then save it as a PDF. As a result, Word documents are generally easier to edit.
